Canada's rapeseed, wheat production reach record levels in 2013
 

 

Statistics Canada has confirmed that in 2013 both rapeseed and wheat production in the country reached record levels.

 

Rapeseed production increased 37.5% from 2012 to a record 8.9 million tonnes in Saskatchewan.

 

Alberta also had a record rapeseed harvest of 6.0 million tonnes, up 17.7% from 2012.

 

Advertisement nationally, rapeseed production was a record 18.9 million tonnes, an increase of 29.5%.

 

Meanwhile, wheat production was up 38.0% to a record 37.5 million tonnes.

 

Alberta set a record with 11.3 million tonnes, with production in Saskatchewan up 43.8% and Manitoba showing an increase of 31.5% from last year.

 

Barley, oats and soy production were also up nationally in 2013.

 

The overall production in the Saskatchewan province was up 40% from last year to a record harvest of 38.4 million tonnes, above the growth plan goal of 36.6 million tonnes by 2020.

 

StatsCan said despite the late start to seeding, weather conditions over the summer led to the higher than normal yields.
