Vietnam's pangasius fish prices down

After staying at record highs for more than 20 days, unprocessed pangasius fish prices have fell by around VND1,000 (US$0.05) per kilogramme, according to the An Giang Fishery Association (AFA).

Specifically, white-meat and yellow-meat pangasius fish in An Giang province are offered at VND27,500-28,100 (US$1.31-1.34) and VND25,000-25,500 (US$1.19-1.21) per kilogramme, respectively, said Nguyen Huu Nguyen, a member of AFA.

The prices in Can Tho, Dong Thap and Tien Giang have also decreased to VND27,000-28,000 (US$1.29-1.33) for the white-meat type and VND24,500-25,000 (US$1.17-1.19) per kilogramme for the yellow-meat one.

Truong Tan Buu, a fish farmer in Dong Thap province's Hong Ngu district, attributed the falling prices to the manipulation from local exporters despite thin supply.

Nguyen echoed with Buu by saying that dip might have been caused by a manipulation by processors and exporters to force farmers to massively sell their fish at low prices.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) previously predicted the pangasius fish price could reach VND30,000 (US$1.43) per kilogramme in December. However, the price has fallen since early this month, rattling farmers in the Mekong Delta.
