Brazil's January to November pork exports up 25 percent
Brazilian pork exports totalled 580,956 tonnes from January to November, up 25 percent compared with the same period in 2004, the Brazilian Industrial Association of Pork Producers and Exporters (Abipecs) said.
Pork export revenue during the same period reached US$1.087 billion, up 56.5 percent year-on-year.
Abipecs reported that pork exports fell in November because of a strike by Brazilian customs officials. As a result, November's export volume fell to 42,000 tonnes from 65,000 tonnes in October. Pork export revenue also fell from US$122 million in October to US$77 million in November.
Despite these recent developments, Abipecs said Brazil's pork sector performed well this year. For the twelve-month period ending in August, the sector's total export value reached US$1 billion for the first time ever. Brazilian pork prices on international markets also rose by 25.3 percent during that period.
