China's Shandong Province to Build Wheat Production Base

 

Tai'an in East China's Shandong Province will invest RMB 75.2 million (US$9.1 million) to construct a State-class quality wheat production base.

 

The State Development and Reform Commission has approved the project.

 

The project is designed to build a 56,000-mu (15 mu equal to one hectare) production base of wheat breeder seed, mother seed and high-quality seed; a 1.8-million-mu quality wheat production base; 21,000-sq-m seed warehouses and drying ground to repair and drill 1,860 motor-pumped wells as well as 1.785 million meters anti-percolating pipes; and to purchase 143 sets of related apparatus and equipment.

 

The project is expected to be completed in 2005. The production base will be able to improve irrigation conditions for 415,000 mu of cultivated area, produce 405,000 kg of quality wheat mother seed, 13.5 million kg of high-quality seed and 720 million kg of quality wheat.
