Japan's Beef Imports From Australia Steady in November
Japan's beef imports from Australia were steady in November compared to the same period last year, with 24,796 tons shipped.
Exports of beef in Australia were healthy despite the recent unfavourable exchange rate movements, tight supply, and high prices and an increase in the chilled beef tariff from 38.5% to 50%. Wholesale prices in November were at their highest levels since May 1993, with grassfed fullset prices averaging 735yen/kg.
The Japanese trade tried to minimise the impact of the increased beef tariff on chilled product, hence leading to the switch from chilled beef to frozen beef in November. 12,517 tons of chilled and 12,279 tons of frozen product were exported to Japan in November, approximately 50% chilled and 50% frozen.
Although the peak demand period for beef in Japan is fast approaching, tight supply from Australia, healthy demand from the US and the domestic markets, and high prices are expected to restrict the amount of beef shipped to Japan in December.
