Philippines sees dip in total swine inventory

 


The Philippines' swine populations on both backyard farms and commercial farms have seen significant declines.


The country's total swine inventory as of October 1, 2021 was estimated at 9.87 million head. This was 12.4% lower than the 11.27 million head for the same period the year prior.


The swine population in backyard farms declined 8.2% while on commercial farms, the population declined by 21.8%. Of the total swine population, 72.1% were raised on backyard farms while the remaining 27.9% were from commercial farms.


In terms of inventory, Western Visayas recorded the highest population of 1.19 million head. This was followed by Central Visayas with 1.14 million head and Northern Mindanao with 1.09 million head. These regions comprised 34.7% of the Philippines' total swine inventory.
