29,000 chickens to be culled in Germany due to bird flu

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state government said about 29,000 chickens will be culled after bird flu was detected on a farm in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district of the state, Reuters reported.

The local government authority of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte said it will set up a 10 km observation area from the affected farm, covering 482 farms in the vicinity with about 644,000 poultry.

Bird flu was also detected on 11 other farms in Germany.

Europe has seen a wave of bird flu outbreaks in recent weeks, believed to be spread by wild birds. The disease has been detected in Britain, Denmark, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden, following cases found in Kazakhstan, Israel, and Russia.
