High concentrations of growth hormones found in Vietnam's pork
Samples of pork in Vietnam have been discovered as containing growth hormones with residues up to 60 times higher than the allowed level, the Southern Agricultural Techniques Institute said during a conference held in Hanoi on December 5.
The research work of the institute shows the prevalence of the use of growth hormones in Vietnam. Most growth hormones were banned from most livestock industry as it is carcinogenic.
According to La Van Kinh, Head of the institute, some 10 kinds of hormones are being used in husbandry with Clenbuterol and Salbutamol the most commonly used
According to Mr Kinh, in some countries, the hormones are added to pig feed during the finishing stages. However, in Vietnam, the hormones are put in at all stages.
Analysts said that most of the hormones are sourced from China, Thailand and Malaysia.
Although no testing has been conducted in northern provinces yet, it is believed the use of growth hormones there is even higher.
