Brazil has world's largest cattle herd in 2004 

 

 

Brazil had the largest number of cattle in the world in 2004 at 204.5 million head, an increase of 4.48 percent from 2003, the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute announced on Dec 6.

 

The Mato Grosso state had 12.67 percent of the country's total herd and was also the main livestock centre.

 

The eastern region of the country, which includes Mato Grosso, had 34.8 percent of Brazil's entire herd, while the northern Amazonica region made up another 19.45 percent.

 

Brazil's poultry population also rose 3 percent from the year before to 944.3 million, while the pig numbers increased 2.42 percent to 33.8 million.
