African Swine Fever Spreads To Russia From Georgia
Russia's federal food quality watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor on Tuesday (December 4, 2007) said African swine fever had been detected in wild boar in the constituent republic of Chechnya, spreading from neighboring Georgia.
Rosselkhoznadzor said when the disease was first reported in Georgia earlier this year it established control on the border, but the disease was spreading through Abkhazia, Southern Ossetia and Armenia.
Rosselkhoznadzor said it was the first case of African swine fever ever registered on Russian territory. Russian military, national security service and the internal affairs ministry are involved in efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
