Amar Seafood secures permit for major aquaculture facility in Canada

Amar Seafood, which specialises in land-based aquaculture, has received a development permit to establish a new facility in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

The facility will significantly expand the company's production, making it the largest land-based aquaculture operation in eastern Canada. Once completed, it is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of over 600 metric tonnes, focusing on Atlantic halibut and spotted wolffish. Groundbreaking for the new project is scheduled for spring 2025.

"This development represents a significant step forward, not only for Amar Seafood but also for the local community and the aquaculture industry," the company said in a statement.

The facility will incorporate advanced technology aimed at minimising environmental impact while enhancing research and development in sustainable aquaculture practices. An environmental impact assessment is ongoing to ensure alignment with the company's commitment to responsibility and innovation.

The municipality reported that Amar Seafood applied to rezone a property across the road from its existing facility in April 2024. The company has since fulfilled the rezoning and development permit requirements.

"The development agreement outlines the expectations for the applicant to meet for the next phases of the development process and will be available for the public once it is registered," Victoria Mayor Martin Ruben stated in a press release. He added that the facility would help meet growing consumer demand for sustainable seafood, create job opportunities, and contribute to the province's economic growth.

Amar Seafood operates five fully licensed aquaculture facilities across Canada, Scotland, and Norway. In November, the company acquired Otter Ferry Seafish, one of the UK's longest-standing aquaculture businesses.
