Vietnam meat prices may jack up on Lunar New Year

Prices of meat are seen to soar by 3 percent to 6 percent prior to Lunar New Year, or Tet holidays due to supply shortage caused by typhoons, the Communist Party of Vietnam said on its website Thursday (December 3).

The Information Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecast prices of pork and beef will rise by three to five percent while chicken is by 4 percent to 6percent.

Earlier Typhoons Ketsana and Mirinae killed 475,000 chicken, 63,000 pigs, 40,000 cows and buffalos, submerged 2,436 fish-raising hectares, and damaged hundreds of hectares of vegetables in central Vietnam.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health has been tightening control over imports of meat and food.
