Two Brazil beef plants reinstated for export to Russia

Russia's agriculture safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor lifted a temporary ban on imports from two Brazil beef plants from November 29, 2019, reported Reuters.

The two reinstated beef plants are Minerva SA and JBS.

The temporary ban on pork and beef imports from Brazil was imposed after Rosselkhoznadzor discovered ractopamine in shipments from Brazil. Ractopamine is a feed additive permissible for use in Brazil but has been prohibited from use in Russia.

While a number of suppliers have been given the approval by the Russian government to resume exports from Brazil, some meat plants such as the ones owned by Minerva and JBS were still banned until the statement from Rosselkhoznadzor.

Ractopamine is a banned feed additive in several countries, including Russia and the European Union. Livestock fed with ractopamine can be raised faster than normal, consuming less feed in the process.
