Two additional swine farming areas to open in Sarawak state, Malaysia

Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Sarawak state, Malaysia's Food Industries, Commodities and Regional Development Minister, said the government of Sarawak has approved a MYR 27 million allocation to open two additional swine farming areas, Borneo Post reported.
The farms will be located at Selangau in Sibu division and Samarakan in Bintulu division.
He said the site at Selangau has been approved and at the final stage of acquiring the land. The site at Samarakn is currently at the preliminary planning stage.
He also said there is surplus pork supply in the state, and the meat continues to be shipped to Singapore, Brunei, and Kalimantan state, Indonesia.
The exported pork comes from the certified Malaysia Good Agriculture Practice anchor farm at the Pig Farming Area Pasir Puteh Simunjan, and pork products from Sarawak's Veterinary Health Mark accredited abattoir and processing plant, also at Pasir Puteh Simunjan.
He said MYR 107.6 million worth of pork has been shipped to Singapore as of mid-November 2022, and MYR 13.5 million worth of pork has been exported to Brunei and Kalimatan annually.
There are 264 broiler farms, 37 layer farms, and 10 poultry breeder farms out of the 311 licenced poultry farms in Sarawak. The current average production of eggs is 55 million pieces per month, and the current production of poultry broilers is 1,300 metric tonnes per month.
In light of the growing domestic and international demand for poultry products, particularly in light of the proposed relocation of the Indonesian capital to Kalimantan, the minister said that the Sarawak government would continue to expand the poultry industry in order to make the state the primary producer of poultry products in the area.
Dr Rundi said that in order to strengthen the state's livestock industry, his ministry has also implemented strategic initiatives, such as the privatisation of livestock stations operated by private firms.
