India sees surge in milk, egg, and meat production, says ministry report

 
 

 

India's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has released a survey report indicating a significant increase in milk, egg, and meat production within the country, The Pioneer reported.

 

The report, based on the Integrated Sample Survey conducted nationwide, reveals that the total milk production for 2022-23 is estimated at 230.58 million tonnes, reflecting a 3.83% increase over the previous year. Egg production is projected to reach 138.38 billion, marking a 6.77% rise, while meat production is expected to hit 9.77 million tonnes, representing a 5.62% increase.

 

India continues to maintain its position as the leading global milk producer. The report highlights a robust growth of 22.81% in total milk production over the past five years, reaching 230.58 million tonnes in 2022-23. The growth rate for the current year is 3.83% compared to the estimates of 2021/22. The increase in milk production from exotic/crossbred cattle and indigenous/non-descript cattle is notable, with a 6.16% and 6.13% rise, respectively.

 

The highest milk-producing state during 2022/23 was Uttar Pradesh, contributing 15.72% to the total production. In terms of egg production, the country is estimated to produce 138.38 billion during 2022-23, with a growth of 33.31% over the past five years. Andhra Pradesh leads in egg production with a 20.13% share, followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka.

 

Meat production in India is estimated at 9.77 million tonnes in 2022/23, showing a growth of 20.39% over the past five years. Uttar Pradesh plays a significant role in meat production, contributing 12.20%, followed by West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Sikkim records the highest Annual Growth Rate (AGR) in meat production at 63.08%, followed by Meghalaya and Goa.
