Triumph Foods suspends construction of new hog plant

Triumph Foods announced it would delay construction on a new hog processing plant in East Moline, Illinois until 2009, and instead would make improvements to its St. Joseph plant.

CEO Rick Hoffman that Triumph would begin construction by January 2009 and open by mid-2010. The company originally planned to open the plant in January 2009.

Triumph officials said they now plan to process 18,000 hogs per day at the new plant and employ 2,000 to 2,400 workers. Originally, the plan was to process 16,000 hogs per day and employ 1,000 workers.

Hoffman said Triumph is currently working on three major improvement projects at its St. Joseph plant, Missouri, including the upgrade of the refrigeration system to accommodate 18,000 hogs per day. The St. Joseph plant opened in 2006.
