56.7% drop in Spain's antibiotic consumption for animal health purpose during 2014-20

Spain saw a 56.7% drop in antibiotic consumption for the purpose of animal health between 2014 and 2020, according to data from PRAN and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

In the 2019-2020 period, there was an upturn in sales of veterinary antibiotics (broad-spectrum penicillins and tetracyclines) that may reflect the context of the pandemic and fears of shortages.

In regards to veterinary antibiotic sales, Spain went from 418.8mg/PCU (milligrams of active ingredient per population correction unit) in 2014 to 181.2mg/PCU in 2020.
