Indonesia urges boost in frozen semen productivity for livestock growth

Indonesia's Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, has called for an increase in frozen semen productivity for livestock to meet the rising demand for meat and milk production in the country, Antara reported.

Minister Sulaiman emphasised the significant potential for livestock growth in Indonesia and urged the enhancement of frozen semen production to support the livestock industry.

During a visit to the Artificial Insemination Centre (BBIB) in Singosari, Malang, East Java, Minister Sulaiman inspected certified superior cattle and goats whose semen had been frozen. The use of artificial insemination is aimed at improving the productivity of farmers' livestock.

Sulaiman encouraged BBIB Singosari to scale up frozen semen production to cater to breeders nationwide. The facility showcased superior cattle breeds, including Limousin, Simental, and Gatotkaca from the Belgian Blue cattle. The Belgian Blue cattle, known for exceptional meat growth advantages, has been a focus of BBIB Singosari's efforts.

Up until November 2023, BBIB Singosari has produced 3.9 million doses of frozen semen, with 2.9 million doses distributed across Indonesia. The facility continues to innovate, incorporating genetic mapping for its livestock and developing frozen sexed semen technology to assist breeders impacted by foot and mouth disease (FMD). The frozen semen technology is crucial for increasing the number of female cattle to enhance milk productivity.

Minister Sulaiman urged BBIB Singosari to increase the male population to 500 as part of efforts to meet the demand for quality frozen semen in alignment with Indonesia's National Standard (SNI).
