Gujarat, India's milk production sees significant growth over two decades
Ahead of National Milk Day, the Gujarat, India state government announced a substantial increase in milk production over the past 22 years.
According to a statement, the state's annual milk production rose by 11.96 million metric tonnes during this period.
Currently, Gujarat produces 17.28 million metric tonnes of milk annually, securing its position as the fourth-largest milk-producing state in India. This accounts for 7.49% of the country's total milk production.
The state's milk production has grown at an average annual rate of 10.23% over the last 22 years, outpacing the national average annual growth rate of 8.46%. In 2000-01, Gujarat's per capita milk availability stood at 291 grams per day. By 2022/23, this figure had risen to 670 grams per day, compared to the national per capita milk availability of 459 grams per day during the same period.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, popularly known as Amul, plays a key role in the state's dairy sector. Amul collects over 30 million litres of milk daily from farmers across Gujarat. This milk is processed into various dairy products and distributed throughout India and around 50 countries globally.
