Rizhao, China invests in US$137 million salmon industrial innovation base

Rizhao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong province, has invested in a CNY 1 billion (US$137.1 million) new salmon industrial innovation base in Lanshan district to elevate the city's marine economy, China Daily reported.

The base incorporates a research and development centre, salmon deep processing factories, deep-sea intelligent cages, and marine farms.

The city has been proactively advancing the modernization of its fisheries sector in recent years, focusing on the comprehensive development of breeding, aquaculture, feed production, deep processing, cold chain logistics, and offshore equipment sectors. The strategic move aligns with Rizhao's commitment to becoming a hub for advanced aquaculture practices.

A salmon aquaculture cage became operational at a marine equipment industrial park in Lanshan district on October 30. Plans are in place to construct six similar aquaculture cages, marking one of the largest projects of its kind in China. The anticipated annual yield from this project is estimated at 1,000 metric tonnes of salmon, with an estimated value of CNY 100 million (US$14 million).

Rizhao's ambitious plans for the salmon industry include the establishment of a development demonstration zone dedicated to creating a comprehensive salmon supply chain. The city aims to achieve an annual salmon production volume of 20,000 tonnes and target an output value of the entire salmon industrial chain reaching CNY 8 billion (US$1.1 billion) by the year 2025.
