Norway to set up meat processing plants in Uganda

Norway and Uganda have entered into a partnership to set up meat processing plants in the East African nation to boost its meat industry.

Two facilities will be established in Nakaseke and Lyantonde districts before the initiative moves on to eastern and northern Uganda.

The plants will be established with the help of Norwegian agricultural cooperative Nortura, said Uganda's minister for animal husbandry, Maj. Bright Rwamirama.

Uganda had been divided into four zones, with each zone expected to have a processing plant, said Rwamirama.

Rwamirama said poor handling of beef and low animal stocks were still a big challenge to Uganda's beef exports, and livestock farmers needed to address disease issues that hindered progress of the livestock sector in both domestic and export markets.
