EU relaxes import quota for Canadian shrimp
The European Union has expanded import quotas for Canadian shrimp. Currently, Canada is allowed 7,000 tonnes of shrimp under a reduced tariff of six percent.
Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn said that this quota has now been changed to 10,000 tonnes.
Shrimp exported beyond the quota is subjected to a 20 percent duty tax.
The change is retroactive to Jan 1 this year.
Canada's shrimp exports have taken a beating recently due to the strong Canadian dollar and EU tariffs.
