Minister assures Indonesia's corn production sufficient enough not to require imports

Indonesia's Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, has assured that the country's rice and corn production is safe, meaning Indonesia does not need to import as domestic food availability is sufficient to meet people's needs throughout the year.

In a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) here on November 24, he noted that the secure rice and corn availability has been achieved due to the hard work of the government and strong support from relevant stakeholders.

He noted that, based on Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, rice production from January to December 2025 is projected to reach 34.77 million tonnes, higher than the target of 32 million tonnes. This, according to Sulaiman, places Indonesia in a strong position to meet national rice needs while maintaining price stability across all regions.

He also mentioned that national rice stocks once reached 4.2 million tonnes, indicating that production increased significantly, higher than the government's initial projections.

He further noted that projections from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reinforce this optimism, with Indonesia's rice production for the 2024–2025 planting season projected to reach 34.6 million tonnes.

Similarly, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicted Indonesia's rice production could surpass 35.6 million tonnes in 2025, demonstrating stronger and more sustainable self-sufficiency.

Meanwhile, for corn, the production of dry shelled corn with a 14% moisture content is estimated to reach 16.55 million tonnes in 2025, 9.34% higher than last year, ensuring feed needs are met without imports.

In addition, the livestock sector also recorded high achievements with the stable production of cattle, goats, sheep, chickens, and eggs.
