DuPont Virkon S re-evaluated to address EU salmonella legislation

With the stringent new EU legislation on salmonella control starting to come into force across the European pig production industry, DuPont Virkon® S has recently been re-evaluated at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

The latest EN 1656 salmonella studies confirmed that Virkon® S achieved excellent dilution rates of 1:100 and 1:200 against all of the five most prevalent human health-related strains of Salmonella - S. enteritidis, S. typhimurium, S. virchow, S. infantis and S. hadar.

Contamination with the five salmonella strains known to be associated with regular human food poisoning will make it difficult for producers to sell their animals. It has therefore never been more important for producers to start reassessing and implementing an effective routine salmonella biosecurity strategy.

Virkon® S is designed for use in all salmonella prevention and decontamination procedures in pig production including the disinfection of surfaces, equipment, foot dips and vehicle wheel dips and cold fogging at a 1:100 dilution rate.

Pig veterinary specialist Jake Waddilove MRCVS explains that enhanced salmonella biosecurity is an area that most producers are giving great thought to, but has to be worked at and tailored to specific farms, with constant review.
