Malaysian State Reports Cattle Infected with Foot-and-Mouth Disease
189 head of cattle in several villages in Malaysia's Terengganu state have been infected with foot-and-mouth disease.
Veterinary Department officers who conducted random checks found 27 cattle infected with the disease in several villages in Besut and Setiu, and 162 animals in three villages in Dungun.
The worst-hit village was at Rantau Abang village in Dungun with 89 head of infected cattle, followed by 40 animals at Pulau Serai, also in Dungun.
According to Head of the State Veterinary Department, Dr Azizol Mohamad Sharun, his men took immediate measures to contain the disease.
"The affected areas have been quarantined and all animals near the area will be vaccinated. The animals will be confined for two weeks and their owners will not be allowed to slaughter them.''
