Irish grass-fed beef set for special recognition by European Commission
The European Commission is in the final stages of bestowing Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status on Irish grass-fed beef, acknowledging its distinct characteristics and geographical origin, BBC News reported.
This recognition, which has advanced without objections, will extend to naturally grazing cattle in both Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, providing a unique assurance across all 32 counties.
Northern Ireland's former agriculture minister, Edwin Poots, had previously urged that farmers from Northern Ireland should benefit from the Republic's application for 'Irish Grass-Fed Beef.' The European Commission expects to complete the final adoption and publication of the application by mid-December.
Republic of Ireland's Agriculture Minister, Charlie McConalogue, expressed enthusiasm for the "tremendous news," highlighting the recognition as an endorsement of the qualities and sustainability of Irish grass-fed beef.
He commended the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and emphasised the importance of harnessing marketing opportunities to communicate the benefits of this recognition to discerning consumers who value quality and sustainability.
