Iran targets 40,000 tonnes of annual shrimp production

Iran is set to achieve an annual shrimp production of 40,000 tonnes in the current calendar year, according to the secretary of the Aquatics Production and Trade Union of Iran, Ali-Akbar Khodaei, Tehran Times reported.

The majority of the country's shrimp output, ranging from 80% to 85%, is concentrated in Hormozgan and Bushehr provinces. Iran's aquaculture industry has been witnessing significant progress, earning global recognition for its production of various fishery products.

Head of the Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO), Hossein Hosseini, highlighted the country's achievements, noting that Iran exported US$600 million worth of fishery products in the previous Iranian calendar year. With a positive balance of US$520 million, he said there is potential for up to US$2 billion in fishery exports, underscoring Iran's growing role as a model for the region and the world in the fishing and aquaculture sector.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) acknowledges Iran's responsible and central role in the regional fishing and aquaculture industry, positioning it as a model for neighbouring countries. Iran's fishery exports experienced a notable 67% increase in value compared to the previous year.

Despite sanctions, the collaborative efforts of the Iran Fisheries Organisation, coupled with crucial research and knowledge-based activities, have propelled the country's aquaculture industry to international markets. The influx of young specialists and knowledge-based experts has played a vital role in sustaining growth and rendering sanctions ineffective in this sector.
