Dutch aquaculture company Kingfish Zeeland to open land-based facility in Maine, US

The new aquaculture facility will raise yellowtail kingfish native to New Zealand, aiming to initially produce 6,000 tonnes of fish, reported Maine Public US.

The new US$110 million facility will be located in Jonesport, Maine, US as it has first access to seawater, with a strong seafood culture and infrastructure from cold-chain shipping to processing, said Ohad Maiman, CEO of Kingfish Zeeland.

He said the new facility will have 70 employees, producing 6,000 tonnes of fish initially after it begins operations.

In an interview with Maiman earlier this year, he said the US is prepared for the introduction of a new farmed fish that's not salmon.

Kingfish Zeeland is the latest aquaculture company to open a facility in Maine, after Belfast and Bucksport's salmon farms and Thomaston's eel farm.
