Thanh Hoa, Vietnam authorities fine swine facility for environmental violations

The administration of Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam has imposed an administrative fine exceeding VND 440 million (US$17,310) on Song Duong Trading Co Ltd for environmental violations at its swine facility.
The company was fined VND 65 million (US$2,557) for discharging wastewater with pollutant levels surpassing environmental standards by 1.5 to 3 times. Authorities directed the company to consistently operate its centralised wastewater treatment system, ensuring all treated wastewater complies with environmental regulations before release.
Additionally, the company was required to cover the cost of wastewater sampling, amounting to over VND 4 million (US$157). This payment will be made to the country's Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Protection, under the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
A further penalty of VND 370 million (US$14,550) was levied against the firm for failing to maintain regular operations of its wastewater treatment system. During inspections, authorities found the system was not functional.
The swine facility, located in Thanh Xuan Commune, Nhu Xuan District, has been operating for years under the management of Trinh Thi Dieu Hang, the company's legal representative and director. The farm houses 2,400 sows and utilises foreign technology in its operations.
