France's pig slaughter drops 2.5% in first nine months of 2022

France's hog slaughter has declined in the first nine months of 2022.
Following an almost stable 2021, pig slaughter in the period saw a 2.5% decrease in volume, reflecting a drop in the country's swine inventory.
In the first eight months of 2022, the export volume of fresh, chilled and frozen pork decreased by 7% (-21,000 tonnes) compared to the same period in 2021.
While exports increased to the European Union (+17%, +30,000 tonnes), they stabilised for Italy, the leading destination (-7%, -3,000 tonnes) and decreased to third countries (-34%, -52,000 tonnes), in particular to China (-58%, -59,000 tonnes).
French imports, virtually entirely of EU origin and mostly from Spain, increased (+7%, +13,000 tonnes).
