Chile and Vietnam to collaborate in agricultural policies through MoU

Chile and Vietnam recently signed a memorandum of understanding which covers several key areas for both countries, including collaboration in agricultural policies and rural development.

That part of the MoU will be materialised with an exchange of best practices in rural infrastructure policies, agricultural processing capacity, and environmental protection. Collaboration will also be sought for animal and plant health, particularly in disease control, surveillance, and pest eradication.

Vietnam is Chile's largest trading partner among the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Both countries signed a free trade agreement in 2011, which entered into force in 2014.

In the first half of 2024, trade exchange between Chile and Vietnam reached US$803.6 million, representing a growth of 1.7% compared to the previous year. Exports reached US$158.9 million and imports hit US$644.7 million in value.

Chile opened an agricultural attaché office in Vietnam in April this year to strengthen economic relations.
