Vietnam produces its first FMD vaccine

Vietnam has successfully produced its first vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Type O, announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The AVAC-V6 FMD Emulsion Type O, developed by AVAC, a member of the Rural Technology Development Group, has been certified by the MARD's Department of Animal Health.

MARD Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong urged the Department to work with AVAC to devise plans for effective distribution of the vaccine, and work to improve quality of the vaccine and reduce its cost.

Vietnam's husbandry sector needs to build plans to improve vaccination in some key localities in the near future, which will help the country's animal products to attain sustainable export markets, he said.

The success of producing the FMD vaccine is expected to help Vietnam better prevent the disease in animals, increase the rate of vaccinated livestock, and save millions of dollars for farmers and the state budget.
