DuPont, Cargill to work with farmers on growing high oleic soy

Press release

DuPont Pioneer and Cargill will work with farmers near Cargill's facility in Sidney, Ohio, to grow Plenish® high oleic soy in 2013.

For the 2013 growing season, Cargill will contract with soy farmers in the Sidney, Ohio, area to grow Plenish® high oleic soys that will be delivered to Cargill's soy facility for processing (on-farm storage with buyer's call). Growers will be eligible for a processor-paid incentive for producing and delivering high oleic soy. Interest in Plenish® high oleic soyoil from food companies continues to be strong and the 2013 Cargill contract programme will support on-going market development activity.

The development of Plenish® high oleic soyoil is an important milestone for Pioneer in its efforts to bring product innovation to the food industry and complements solutions offered by DuPont Nutrition & Health to address the world's challenges in food. High oleic soyoil provides a soy-based trans fat alternative for food companies and foodservice operators. Plenish® high oleic soys from Pioneer contain the highest oleic content (more than 75%) of any soy product under commercial development.

This improvement in the oil profile brings a dramatic increase to the stability of the oil, resulting in longer shelf life in packaged foods, and greater fry life for foodservice operators. From a health and nutrition standpoint, Plenish® high oleic soyoil has zero gram trans fat per serving and 20% less saturated fat than commodity soyoil, making it a more attractive ingredient for consumer food products.

The Pioneer high oleic soy trait is part of the total soy performance package powered by the Pioneer proprietary Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT™) system. Field testing has confirmed yields on par with elite commercial products. Plenish® high oleic soys are approaching completion of global regulatory approvals with over 96% of US soy export markets now approved, including China, Japan, Mexico and many other countries. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completed its review of Plenish® high oleic soys in 2009 and the USDA deregulation in June 2010 allows Plenish® high oleic soy to be grown under contract for on-going field testing in the US and additional oil testing by major oil processors and food companies.
