Canada Cattle Prices Well Below US

Canadian slaughter steers last week were going for 66 cents per pound in U.S. dollars, according to a report on Good Morning Ontario.

Canadian cattle prices are about $500 less per head than U.S. cattle prices, according to Jim Long, Genesus/Keyston Pig Advancement.

In his weekly commentary he noted that Canadian steer carcass weights are 865 pounds, five pounds heavier than a year ago. But Canadian steers are not currently backed up, Long said.

In a related item, Good Morning Ontario reported there's a new way to measure feed efficiency in cattle that could save beef producers millions in feed costs annually.

This is known as "Net feed intake"; the difference between the animal's actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance and growth, will be used to select the best genetics for beef production, according to Dr. John Basarab, a research scientist and beef management specialist with Alberta Ag.
