16,100 turkeys culled in Germany following confirmed bird flu outbreak
German local government authority Landkreis Vorpommern-Ruegen has ordered 16,100 turkeys to be culled after H5N8 bird flu was confirmed on another poultry farm on the island of Ruegen in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommer, Reuters reported.
The authority said bird flu is bring spread by wild birds, with 23 cases detected in Ruegen since end-October.
Europe has reported several bird flu outbreaks attributed to wild birds.
Dutch health officials ordered 48,000 chickens to be culled after bird flu was discovered on a farm at Groningen province on November 10, while Britain ordered 13,000 birds on a northwest England farm to be culled, citing bird flu.
