EU hits deadlock on Syngenta GM corn

EU ambassadors failed to approve a GM corn made by Swiss firm Syngenta, and the application will now be sent to EU ministers for a decision this week.

There was no majority in either favour or against, so the decision to approve or not is now up to the Council this week.

Animal feed importers are looking for the approval of Syngenta's GM corn type MIR604, which is crucial for the resumption of soy and soymeal imports.

The EU had recently approved of three GM corn for imports and consumption, but the move will not unblock US soy imports until Syngenta's GM corn is approved.
