Access to China's market could drive strong growth of Russia's pork exports
The opening of China's market to Russian pork could double Russia's pork exports in the medium term, according to Dmitry Krasnov, head of Agroexport.
Krasnov expected pork exports to China to reach up to 100,000 tonnes in the next few years and possibly up to 200,000 tonnes. In 2022, total Russian pork exports were a little over 160,000 tonnes, and in 2023, they are expected to reach 200,000 tonnes.
This development is crucial as the Russian market is already fully supplied with its own products, and additional production can only be ensured through new export markets. The opening of the Chinese market is expected to have positive effects, including increased production, job creation, company development and increased tax revenues.
In September, China's General Administration of Customs approved the import of pork supplies from Russia after assessing the risk and the control system for African swine fever in the country.
