TALKS HELD ON FUNCTIONAL FEED ADDITIVES
Nutriad holds customer event at 2017 EAS conference
Belgian feed additives producer Nutriad hosted a customer event at the 2017 European Aquaculture Society (EAS) conference, which took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on Oct. 17-20.
Nutriad's event "Functional feed additives in aquaculture: How to add more?" was well received by producers of marine fish, fish feed producers, and consultants and academic scientists that attended from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Norway and Croatia.
"Nutriad has invested considerably and consistently in aquaculture research and service during recent years, building a team of experts with global experience in health and specialty additives for fish and shrimp", stated Dr. Peter Coutteau, business unit director - Aquaculture.
"This seminar was aimed at sharing information with our European aquaculture customers, with a specific emphasis on the Mediterranean producers of marine fish. The audience represented well over 50% of the marine fish production in the Mediterranean region, covered either as farmer or feed supplier", he added.
Invited speaker Dr. Panos Varvarigos, provided an overview of the current health challenges and farm management strategies to prevent disease in Mediterranean marine fish.
Veterinarian Maria Mercè Isern, business development manager - Aqua Health reviewed global experiences with Nutriad's functional feed additives to promote fish health.
Alexander van Halteren, business development manager - Aqua Nutrition, demonstrated how functional feed additives can enhance digestive/metabolic processes in carnivorous fish.
Dr. Palenzuela Oswaldo, researcher at CSIC Torre de la Sal, Spain, reported on a recent study that demonstrated the capability of a functional feed additive to reduce the impact of an infection with Enteromyxum leei on growth and parasite development in gilthead seabream.
Maria Mercè Isern closed the session with a talk on prevention strategies for monogenean gill parasites and Nutriad's current research programmes in this field. Monogenean parasites are currently regarded as one of the main threats by marine fish producers in southern Europe.
At the EAS17 Exhibition, Nutriad's booth focused on programmes for aquaculture additives that support the prevention of diseases and parasitic infections (SANACORE®, AQUASTIM®, APEX® AQUA, BACTINIL® AQUA) and species-specific digestive/metabolic enhancers to reduce feed cost and improve performance in fish and shrimp (AQUAGEST®, AQUALYSO®, LIPOGEST®).
At the scientific conference, Nutriad co-authored a scientific contribution by Rocio Robles et al. demonstrating that a functional feed additive can reduce the mortality caused by the monogenean parasite Diplectanum sp. in European seabass.
Concluded Nutriad CEO Erik Visser: "To address the nutritional, digestion and health needs from different aquaculture species, Nutriad has invested in the development of a range of species specific feed additives that have proven their efficacy across the world, which is coupled with high level technical support from our aqua team. BioMar absorbs Alimentsa…
BioMarand Alimentsa have presented themselves to the public as one company for the first time at the largest shrimp event in Latin America following the approval of the acquisition by concerned authorities.
Alimentsa became officially part of BioMar, a Danish aquaculture feed maker, on Sept. 13. The acquisition positions BioMar as among the leading shrimp feed producers in Latin America.
BioMar is expected to contribute to the development of an already strong product portfolio in Alimentsa by providing access to large-scale global R&D resources as well as proven product solutions already performing in related markets.
At Aqua Expo in Guayaquil, Ecuador, BioMar and Alimentsa joined forces with a team featuring business leaders, sales, technical support as well as shrimp experts. Together with the customers, stakeholders and keynote speakers the scene was set to discuss the top-of-the-agenda themes such as sustainability, nutrition, feed management and disease prevention.
"Aqua Expo has proven to be an optimal opportunity to kick-start our external cooperation engaging with customers and industry stakeholders. We have been working together side by side presenting Alimentsa as part of our global organisation at the same time listening to expectations from the market", explained Henrik Aarestrup, VP Emerging Markets, BioMar Group.

In November BioMar and Alimentsa will invite customers and stakeholders to participate in a dedicated event celebrating the 30th anniversary of Alimentsa, as well as shedding light on the future possibilities for the shrimp farmers in Ecuador when it comes to feed solutions.
Alimentsa, established in 1986, is a leading Ecuadorian shrimp feed supplier operating within the Ecuadorian market. Ecuador is one of the top shrimp producers in the world and is the third-largest shrimp exporter to the US as of 2016.

…Fish feed facility's expansion has highest hourly output
BioMar Group's production facility in Karmøy, Norway, officially opened Line 3, which has an annual capacity of 140,000 tonnes of fish feed, increasing its output by around 70%. Line 3 will have one of the highest hourly output capacities of any single production line of fish feed anywhere in the world.
State Secretary Roy Angelvik, from the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries on Wednesday, Oct. 25, officially opened Line 3 alongside Carlos Diaz, CEO of BioMar Group and Jan Sverre Røsstad, vice president and head of BioMar Group Salmon Division.
"We wish to continue providing the salmon industry with the very best, high-performance fish feed, and to do that we need to invest in the latest and best technologies. It is also important to us to have environmentally friendly equipment so that we minimise our impact on the natural environment", said Diaz.
BioMar Group said it had invested NOK436 million for the construction of production Line 3 and its associated auxiliary systems, new laboratories and control rooms.
Among some of the new advanced technologies BioMar has invested in is a highly efficient air processing system that handles all air emissions from the factory in four scrubbing towers that use cold seawater to scrub emissions.
This seawater also provides cooling for the production line, making for a high degree of energy efficiency and an environmentally friendly cooling system.
"Our new production line will be a substantial new resource for our business. It is a highly sophisticated line for which we have endeavoured to find the best solutions available worldwide for the efficient and sustainable production of salmon feed for the future," Røsstad said.
The annual capacity of the Karmøy site is now over 340,000 tonnes of finished fish feed destined for salmon farms mainly in Norway but potentially around the world, BioMar said.
It said the facility will need to handle around 680,000 tonnes of raw materials and finished product in connection with the operations.

Aller Aqua opens 6th factory in China
Danish fish feed maker Aller Aqua Group inaugurated its sixth factory in Qingdao, China, on Oct.31, just a month after the inauguration of the company's Zambian factory.
"Inaugurating two factories in two months is exceptional", Hans Erik Bylling, Aller Aqua Group president said. "We have had a few busy years leading up to the inaugurations and now we are finally ready".
Almost 200 people were in attendance during the inauguration, and the day before, Aller Aqua organised the International Cold Fish Aquaculture Technology Seminar, which had almost 300 participants.
Aller Aqua chose to establish itself in China without a Chinese partner to "ensure that we can continue to deliver the products that the customers are familiar with", said Bylling.
"We have delivered high-quality aquafeed to China for the last 20 years, produced under European standards, and we will continue to run the factory like we would in Denmark. We will do this by sourcing the raw materials in Europe, and ensure a highly trained local team which knows how to comply with the European standards", he added.
The Qingdao factory will focus on the growing cold-water species aquaculture industry in China. It will have a production capacity of 45,000 tonnes annually. The factory is Aller Aqua's first in Asia. Hans Erik Bylling said, "The factory will increase our competitiveness in China, with shorter delivery times to key markets".
The factory will also export to South Korea and Vietnam.
Aller Aqua produces fish feed for more than 60 countries worldwide in factories in Denmark, Poland, Germany, Egypt, Zambia and China.

INFLUENCE OF YEAST ON TILAPIA
ICC presents latest research at LACQUA 17
Brazilian yeast additive maker ICC participated in the major aquaculture event LACQUA 17, which was held in Mazatlan, Mexico, on Nov. 7-10.
The conference aimed to bring discussions on the market to countries where aquaculture development has great potential.
ICC presented its newest work in aquaculture, "Dietary influence of yeast as a source of nucleotides on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)".
This is the second time ICC has participated in the event. In 2015 the LACQUA (Latin American and Caribbean Aquaculture) took place in Brazil's Fortaleza city.
SUPPORT FOR SCOTTISH FARMERS
AquaGen Scotland officially opens
The AquaGen Scottish office formally opened at the Stirling University Innovation Park on Oct. 31. Invited customers and co-partners participated in the opening ceremony and a seminar organised at the Stirling Court Hotel the following day.
With the Scottish office opening, the Norwegian fish breeder aims to strengthen its market efforts and technical support to customers in Scotland and Ireland. Andy Reeve, managing director at AquaGen Scotland Ltd, said, "In the future we will follow up the fish more closely to see how they perform under Scottish farming conditions".
The new production sites will be included in AquaGen's back-up production network and further strengthen the security of egg supply to European salmon farmers.
