Japan bans chicken imports from Britain for flu

Japan has banned baby chicken and poultry meat imports from Britain because a bird flu outbreak has been reported there, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said Wednesday (November 14, 2007).

Japan imported some 160,000 domestic poultry from Britain in 2006. Of Japan's baby chicken imports, British products accounted for some 25 percent, the second-largest share after French chickens, according to the Kyodo report.

Japanese poultry farmers who have used British baby chickens are expected to switch to imports from other countries, the news agency said.
