Nigeria poultry farmers urge government intervention over high lending rates
The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) says current agricultural borrowers' programmes are not channelled to all farmers, reported Punch Nigeria.
Ezekiel Ibrahim, PAN president made these statements at the 2019 Nigeria Poultry Show, held in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, attended by various stakeholders in the industry.
Joseph Aladesuyi, national secretary representing Ibrahim, said not all of Nigeria's poultry farmers are able to obtain the current Anchor Borrowers' programmes, which meant they have to turn to banks that offer high interest rates.
On the subject of Nigeria's recent border closure, Ibrahim said this will benefit the local poultry industry through increased sales and expanded production, adding that there will be more job opportunities in the country.
Also at the event, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Nigeria's Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control warned poultry farmers about the dangers of antibiotics overuse to promote growth in animal feeds.
