Thai firm CPF Swine Business pioneers sustainable waste management initiative

In a significant step towards promoting circular economy principles, CPF Swine Business, a division of the Thai firm CPF, has launched an innovative programme that converts farm waste into resources that benefit both the environment and local communities.

The initiative, named "Waste No More, Sustaining Sustainability," recently won top recognition at the CPF Sustainability in Action Awards 2024, underscoring the company's dedication to resource management in its swine farming operations throughout Thailand.

The project addresses waste management comprehensively, focusing on wastewater from animal manure across all stages of CPF's operations — from swine feed production to slaughtering and processing. Developed through a collaboration among CPF employees, the initiative aims to support social responsibility and a harmonious relationship with local communities.

Employing advanced technology and precise process management, CPF has transformed farm waste into four valuable resources: high-quality ash, nutrient-rich fertiliser water, biogas, and organic sludge.

The "Good Ash Feed to Farm" programme repurposes ash from biomass incinerators at pig feed production plants. After testing and approval by the Department of Industrial Works in Prachinburi Province, the ash is now used as an eco-friendly alternative to lime on contract farms, helping farmers save over THB 300,000 (US$ 8,683) per farm annually.

In the "Good Fertiliser Water for Farmers" programme, treated wastewater from swine farms is processed to produce methane, generating electricity and reducing dependence on the national power grid by 50-70%. The treated water is reused on-site and shared with local farmers during droughts. CPF has established a learning centre to promote expertise in fertiliser use and water management, supporting local community enterprises in producing regional products like iodine-enriched salted eggs and organic rice crackers.

The "Good Sludge for Farmers" programme converts sediment from the biogas system into organic fertiliser. Partnering with agricultural agencies and local authorities, CPF supplies this nutrient-rich fertiliser to farming projects, including the Ban Dai community's vegetable initiative and the Prince Chakraband Pensiri Centre for Plant Development's royal projects.

Through "Waste No More, Sustaining Sustainability," CPF has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable practices and community development. This project supports CPF's goals to achieve net-zero emissions while fostering knowledge exchange among employees and local communities.

Awarded as an Outstanding Project at the CPF Sustainability in Action Awards 2024, the initiative highlights CPF's efforts to optimise resource use, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and create a sustainability-focused culture within local communities. This comprehensive approach exemplifies how agricultural businesses can drive positive social and environmental impact alongside profitable operations, setting a model for sustainable farming practices worldwide.
