Norway aquaculture companies ranked most sustainable in FAIRR Protein Index
Four aquaculture companies in Norway are in the top 10 of the recent Coller FAIRR Protein Index, which ranks major global publicly-listed protein producers on their sustainability measures for investors, the Norwegian Seafood Council reported.
Mowi, the biggest salmon producer in the world, was ranked first, followed by Lerøy in third, Grieg Seafood in sixth and Salmar in ninth.
Renate Larsen, managing director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, said the ranking shows that Norwegian aquaculture is the among the most sustainable food production in the world.
Larsen said consumers want to know where their food comes from, and the report shows that conscious consumers prefer Norwegian salmon.
The Norwegian aquaculture companies were judged based on the following risk factors related to sustainability: food safety, waste and pollution, working conditions, fresh water use, antibiotics, animal welfare, greenhouse gas emission and deforestation and biodiversity loss.
The Coller FAIRR Protein Index report assists investors to make decisions in the protein industry. The index is only benchmark that profiles animal protein producers and highlights critical gaps, as well as areas of best practice
