New African swine fever cases detected in Chongqing, China

The African swine fever (ASF) virus was discovered by China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs among 25 piglets transported illegally in the city, reported Reuters.

According to the ministry's website, all of the ASF-infected swine discovered in a truck travelling on Dianjiang country were quarantined, and later culled. One of the piglets had died during the quarantine.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs will continue its investigation on the new outbreak.

ASF was first reported in China in August 2018. The fatal swine disease has spread throughout China, reducing more than 40% of the total population of swine in the country, with repercussions on the global swine market.
