Singapore makes first import of beef and pork from Jeju, South Korea

According to Jeju Province and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on the 2nd, quarantine negotiations for exporting Jeju Hanwoo (Korean beef) and pork to Singapore were concluded following a recent summit between Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul.
Through this negotiation, Jeju became the only region in South Korea authorised to export livestock products to Singapore. The four Jeju-based export facilities approved by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) are the Jeju Livestock Agricultural Cooperative Livestock Products Auction Market, Jeju Swine Livestock Industry Cooperative Livestock Products Comprehensive Distribution Centre, Seogwipo Livestock Cooperative Local Meat Processing Plant, and Daehan F&B.
Singapore, known for its stringent sanitary and quarantine standards, requires World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) foot-and-mouth disease-free zone certification as a prerequisite for livestock imports. Jeju became the only region in South Korea to obtain this certification on May 29 and received final approval for its export facilities two months after an SFA on-site inspection conducted from August 25 to 28.
Jeju Province anticipates that the first export to Singapore this year will mark the beginning of expanding its livestock product market. The province plans to use Singapore as a hub to broaden its export network to neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand in the future.
