Aviagen East Africa launches new training module for local poultry producers

Aviagen® East Africa, Aviagen's joint venture in Tanzania, welcomed poultry professionals from six countries across the East Africa region to its new Aviagen East Africa Training Module in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on October 7-11.

During the training, attendees explored aspects of best practice breeder, broiler and hatchery management, and how to develop prioritised strategies for increased biological output at the optimum unit cost.

Throughout the week, participants connected with poultry professionals and interact with Aviagen trainers who shared their insights on key topics including data handling, uniformity, grading, broiler management, broiler nutrition, egg handling, and floor egg management.

Attendees were assigned groups at the beginning of the week, to work collaboratively on a case study, culminating in a presentation of their findings to a panel of Aviagen experts at the end of the training module. This teamwork fostered in-depth discussions, knowledge, idea generation, and problem-solving.

During the graduation ceremony, the team recognised for outstanding performance received a certificate and a gift in acknowledgement of their impressive contributions throughout the training.

One of the highlights of the week was a breakout analysis practical session, led by David Bailey, hatchery and general administration manager at Aviagen East Africa.

This type of training module was the first for the East African region, according to  Aviagen.

Bailey said "This was the first Aviagen East Africa Training Module, and it was a huge success. We had a total of 27 attendees from countries all across the region including Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, and Zambia. This training module is of great importance to the East Africa region as it enables us to support local farmers by equipping them with the knowledge to produce well-performing flocks, and achieve the best return on investment. We look forward to our future Training Modules, which we plan to do annually."

"The Aviagen East Africa Training Module was great and provided all participants with a great deal of knowledge," commented Patrick Banda, farm manager at Hybrid Poultry.

Loveness Kimario, assistant rearing manager at Silverlands, said: "The training provided practical insights into breeder and broiler management, hatchery practices and nutrition, deepening my understanding of production. The interactive sessions allowed for real world application of the concepts learned throughout the training. This module offered valuable insights and practical skills beneficial to my role, and I look forward to implementing what I have learned."

Adam Nsengiyuma, assistant breeder farm manager at Easy Hatch Ltd, said: "The content was not only relevant but also engaging, and it truly equipped us with valuable skills and insights that we can apply in our work."
