Managing Pig Farming For Sustainable Pork Production
 
As the world places a demand on global agriculture to make progress in sustainability, we continue to see how research attests to the benefits of using the latest solutions to address the stages of livestock production.
 
Today, the urgency of slowing down climate change's impact would certainly get more farmers to be mindful of their carbon footprint. And, as far as sustainability is concerned, it is a very broad concept that is linked to the various aspects of livestock production: animal health, feed formulation and meat quality, just to name a few.
 
Most of these factors relate to what goes into the meat-producing animal. Thus, industry players are working on more effective nutritional solutions to cut the need for antibiotics, improve efficiencies in feeding and, in some cases, reduce the amount of carbon emissions from animals.
 
"Modern animal nutrition is extremely technical and precise; the animal's nutritional requirements are calculated to optimise performance while minimising cost and environmental impact," Pancosma states (pages 8-9) in this November issue of Livestock & Feed. The company presents its high-intensity sweetener, Sucram, which is "used as an incentive to switch from liquid to solid feed" and can support positive outcomes for piglets including "better gut health, reduction of diarrhea and improved performance."
 
As with other livestock, swine production is not only a part of meeting food security but also needs change to operate at lesser costs to the environment.
 
In the interest of animal nutrition, feeding better helps pave the way forward for livestock production's future.
