Sarawak takes top spot of tilapia production in Malaysia

Sarawak remains Malaysia's largest producer of tilapia, continuing to play a vital role in meeting the nation's fish supply needs.
Fisheries Malaysia director-general Dato Adnan Hussain said the state's achievement reflects the success of aquaculture initiatives, particularly those in Batang Ai.
"The self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) of the nation's fish supply has increased to 91.6% last year," he said on November 8.
"This demonstrates the country's ability to meet local demand, which now averages 48.1 kilogrammes of fish per person per year."
Citing figures from a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, he said Malaysia's total fishery production last year stood at 1.9 million metric tonnes, comprising 1.3 million tonnes from capture fisheries and 511,000 tonnes from aquaculture.
