Animal transport is special focus of EU meeting

The European Commission will especially focus on animal transport at an animal welfare meeting on Friday, Nov. 10.

With the theme "Everyone Is Responsible", the second meeting of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare will gather 75 stakeholders involved in animal welfare. It will work toward three main goals: a better application of EU rules on animal welfare, the development of voluntary commitments by its members, and the promotion of EU animal welfare standards at global level, the EC said in a media release.

Health and Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis is to open the meeting, which will be web-streamed here from 10:00 CET.

The EC will establish a subgroup on animal transport with a specific focus on improving enforcement in this area, which is its key priority in the field of animal welfare.

In addition, the session on information sharing will focus on the European Food Safety Authority's Animal Health and Welfare Network and on the Animal Transport Guides pilot project.
