Taiwan sees 3% rise for beef imports

Taiwan's beef imports reach 87,471 tonnes, a 3% rise over 2011 and 20% above the five-year average.

Australia remained the largest beef supplier to Taiwan, with exports totalling 38,185 tonnes, up 21% on-year. Underpinning the increase was stronger demand for Australian chilled beef. The increase for the past year took Australia's imported market share in Taiwan from 37% in 2010-11, to 44% in 2011-12. Meanwhile Taiwanese imports of US beef for 2011-12 declined 26% on-year, to 21,949 tonnes largely due to restrictions placed upon US beef by Taiwanese authorities.
