US's Triumph Foods to open pork processing plant in Jan 2006
The new Triumph Foods pork processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri, is expected to open in early January after the start up was delayed from this fall by an explosion Oct 12.
Triumph Foods is a producer-owned limited liability company with 13 members representing about 50 hog producers. The US$135 million plant will be able to process more than 1,000 hogs/hour. The plant will open with a one-shift slaughter operation but will eventually add a second shift.
"The unfortunate accident on Oct 12 delayed the opening, but we believe we can begin full-scale operations in early 2006," said Rick Hoffman, Triumph Foods chief executive.
The explosion severely damaged the offices portion of the facility. It killed one construction worker and injured several others.
